Background:Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. There are many factors that can cause ED, including obesity, high blood pressure, smoking, alcohol consumption, and hormonal imbalances.
Objective:To determine whether the use of Cialis, a widely prescribed oral medication for erectile dysfunction (ED), was associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke in a population-based cohort study.
Design:A prospective, multicentre cohort study of the use of Cialis for ED in France.
Setting:Northwestern France. Participants were men aged 18 to 79 years old with a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction (ED) lasting for up to 36 months. Participants were recruited through advertisements, online pharmacies, or direct-to-consumer advertisements.
Patient selection:Data from patients with diabetes, hypertension, or any other cardiovascular risk factors were excluded. Those with a prior history of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, or MI, who were taking Cialis were also excluded.
Intervention:Participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire, which included questions regarding their sexual activity and the patient’s ability to achieve or maintain an erection. Cialis was administered once a day. The study was registered in the French national register on sexual health (National Commission on the Control and Prevention of Sexual Health).
Results:A total of 6,935 men (95% of participants) in the intervention and 3,936 men (95% of participants) in the control groups were diagnosed with ED. The number of participants who were diagnosed with CHD increased from 4,543 to 6,813 between the two groups. The most common sexual activity reported during the intervention period was erections and intercourse (33.8% of participants, 95% of participants), followed by masturbation (31.7%) and penetrative sex (31.3%).
Conclusion:The use of Cialis in France is an important and safe medication for patients with ED. The use of Cialis for ED should be considered in patients who meet specific criteria for CHD. It should also be used in patients with diabetes or hypertension, who are not able to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse.
